Why Traditional Meditation Fails (The Mismatch)
Can’t Sit Still: Why does traditional meditation fail the adhd brain? A huge part is not being able to sit or lie still for any length of time, but it also requires the ability to “clear the mind”. For those with racing brains and a hyperactive nervous system, this can feel like an uphill struggle. It can also illicit feelings of frustration and failure, resulting in even more stress and anxiety.
Dopamine Deprivation: ADHD brains are always on the look out for stimulation and engagement; even just 20 minutes of trying to focus on the breath can feel quite “torturous”. Far from relaxing, this form of meditation can contribute to physical agony rather than calm.
Overwhelming Inner Focus: Looking inward can feel chaotic for the ADHD brain. If not managed properly, thoughts and feelings may become even more erratic, leading to complete ‘brain overload’
Time Blindness: Long (or even short) meditation sessions often conflict with an ADHDer's difficulty in tracking time, making it hard to build a consistent habit.
What to Do Instead: The Power of Mindful Colouring Affirmations
Enable “Active” Stillness: Mindful Colouring occupies the logical part of the brain with repetitive, rhythmic motions, which is a win for the ADHD brain, as it naturally slows down racing thoughts without the frustration of trying to keep the mind blank.
The Science of "Flow State": Colouring in the different designs triggers a “flow state” – allowing the brain to experience a deep state of concentration. When the brain is focused intently on patterns and affirmations, it can lose track of external noise and time.
Sensory Regulation for All Ages: The sensation of the marker pens on paper and the visual processing of the colour choices is a great way to provide a multi-sensory experience, keeping the ADHD brain occupied without feeling overwhelmed.
Calm the "Fear Centre": Various scientific studies have shown that focused colouring can lower activity in the amygdala, the brain's emotional control centre, significantly reducing anxiety, stress, and negative moods.
Why Pairing Colouring with Affirmations is the "Magic Touch"
Brain Training in Action: Regular mindful colouring with positive affirmations actively helps the brain "re-program" negative self-talk into positive. Over time this can facilitate change, growth, and an empowered mindset.
Intentional Re-focusing: Combining a physical task (colouring) with a mental anchor (affirmations like "I am Brave" or "Deep breaths calm me down") provides a double-layered defense against ADHD-related intrusive thoughts.
Healing Doubts: Whether you are 8 or 80, for those who feel they have failed at sitting still, finishing a colouring page with an empowering message can be a very rewarding experience, building resilience, self-esteem and a huge sense of accomplishment.
Inclusive Colouring for all Abilities: Unlike other mindfulness tools, mindful colouring is easy to access at any time or place and does not require any special skills. Above all it is an incredible tool (for all ages) for harnessing a brain break when needed.
When Mindful Colouring serves as Active Meditation
Mindful colouring with affirmations serves as a "Mental Reset", providing the structured engagement an ADHD brain needs to achieve the same relaxation benefits as traditional meditation. By replacing passive stillness with active creativity, mindful colouring offers a direct path to a calm and tranquil state.
Creating this book has been a passion project for me. As someone who truly believes in the power of mindful colouring and positive affirmations for the ADHD brain, seeing it finally "out in the wild" means the world.

One Small Favour...
As a self-published author on Amazon, reviews are my lifeblood. They tell the Amazon "robots" that this book is helpful, which helps other ADHD families and individuals find it.
Once your book arrives and you’ve had a chance to try a page, would you mind leaving an honest review? Even two sentences about your favourite affirmation makes a massive difference.
Thank you for being part of this journey to make mindfulness accessible for all our "busy" brains!
Happy 'Calm' Colouring
